| PHARMACOLOGY |
The
plant's action as a galactagogue has been reported2. In a study
it was shown that in the estrogen - primed rats, Asparagus racemosus could cause both
increase in the weight of mammary lobulo - alveolar tissue and the milk yield3.
Antioxytocic and anti ADH activity in the saponin fractions isolated from the roots of
Asparagus racemosus has been observed4. A study on the plant was
shown to posses anabolic properties viz. growth promotion. The plant is also considered as
an adaptogenic substance5. Clinical efficacy of root powder
evaluated in patients with duodenal ulcer6. |
| THERAPEUTIC
USES |
The plant
has been used in Ayurveda for various conditions. Its main use has been as a galactagogue
to increase milk secretion during lactation. It is also used as a general tonic and as an
aphrodisiac7. |
