CHEMICAL COMPOSITION Fruit contains capsaicin, capsicin and solanine.
PHARMACOLOGY Capsaicin, when fed along with cholesterol containing diets to female albino rats, prevented significantly the rise in liver cholesterol levels.
THERAPEUTIC USES It is a powerful stimulant and carminative. It stimulates the secretion of saliva and gastric juice, and increases peristaltic movement and motility of stomach. It is an excellent remedy in atonic and flatulent dyspepsia and dipsomania. Regular ingestion is very beneficial in vericose veins, anorexia, liver congestion and vascular conditions. It is externally rubefacient and counterirritant. It is useful in lumbago, neuralgia, putrid sore throat, scarlatina etc.
