Coleus
forskohlii |
|
| CHEMICAL
COMPOSITION |
Forskolin
has been found to be the main active constituent of the roots1,
though many other diterpenoids viz. deacetyl forskolin, 9-deoxyforskolin, 1,
9-deoxyforskolin,1, 9-dideoxy- 7-deacetylforskolin along with four minor diterpenoids have
been reported2. |
| PHARMACOLOGY |
Forskolin
reduces preload and afterload of the heart due to its vasodilating action and augments
myocardial contractility due to its positive inotropic action without affecting myocardial
oxygen consumption.Forskolin relaxed contracted airways in-vitro and
prevented methacholine and acetylcholine induced bronchoconstriction in asthmatics and
healthy subjects respectively3. It shows blood pressure lowering
and cardioactive properties4. |
| THERAPEUTIC
USES |
It is
used as a cardiac tonic. It is indicated to lower the blood pressure4. |
