There are
two groups of important substances in Ginkgo biloba : the flavonoids and the terpenes
(ginkgolides) 1. |
| PHARMACOLOGY |
It has antioxidant and anti -
coagulant qualities. The Antioxidant action of Ginkgo has been shown to have beneficial
effects on brain neurons subjected to ischemia 2
.Ginkgo has repeatedly been shown to improve cognitive functions in humans
and laboratory animals Ginkgo has repeatedly been shown to improve cognitive functions in
humans and laboratory animals. Ginkgo biloba extract protects neuronal cell
membranes from free radical damage 3 . It was found that
Ginkgo biloba extract improved concentration and memory in elderly patients with arterial
insufficiency 4 . |
| THERAPEUTIC
USES |
Clinically important
indications for Ginkgo biloba extract include Alzheimer's disease and similar dementias,
cerebral insufficiency due to stroke, and atherosclerotic disease of the peripheral
arteries 4 . |
