Senna
(Cassia angustifolia) |
|
| CHEMICAL
COMPOSITION |
Contains
glycosides, sennoside A, sennoside B, sennoside C and sennoside D1. |
| PHARMACOLOGY |
Maximum
cathartic action was seen in rats due to direct stimulant activity and water and
electrolyte secretion2. Sublaxative doses of standardised senna
fruit showed spasmolytic activity3. Effective dose of piperazine
for the treatment of thread worms and round worms was substantially reduced by the
addition of extract of senna. Water extract was found effective against Trichophyton
purpurceum4. |
| THERAPEUTIC
USES |
Leaves
and pods are traditionally used as purgatives5. Leaves are used
topically for dermatosis. Laxative effect of standardised senna fruit granules was
compared with liquid paraffin or a mixture of liquid paraffin and magnesium hydroxide in
nursing mothers. Senna was more effective than the control treatment in overcoming
puerperal constipation while the bowel habits of infants were not affected6. |
