| CHEMICAL
COMPOSITION |
The plant contains a number of steroidal sapogenins. The alkaloid
trigonelline, trigocoumarin, trimethyl coumarin and nicotinic acid are also present.
Mucilage is a prominent constituent in the seeds 1. |
| PHARMACOLOGY |
This plant has been mentioned
in early literature as a hypoglycaemic and anti-inflammatory agent. Its effects as an oral
hypoglycaemic has been evaluated 2 .Antiulcer
property has been studied in rats 3 .Hypocholesterolemic
effects 4and
antiinflammatory effects have been observed5. |
| THERAPEUTIC
USES |
It forms an important
medicinal use of the plant in rheumatic disorders and spondylosis. It is used as an
adjunct in Diabetes mellitus. It is indicated in hyperlipidaemia 6 . |
